Check Engine Light is on.           ©Smitty

My check engine light came on my 2001 with the 4.3 ltr engine. We have a yearly Emission check here in the Atlanta area, so repair is required.

Got the OBDII code reader and hooked it up. Giving me a code of 0410 the Secondary Injection system. There is an electric Air (Smog) Pump located under the radiator on the right side. There are fuses and a relay for the pump located under the battery tray. When the pump gets old and stops turning it usually blows the fuse also.

You need to disconnect the battery cables before you start. Jack the front end up for easier access. Next, remove the plastic cover under the radiator. Two bolts on each side. Once the cover is off you will see the electric pump on the right (passenger) side. Remove the hose assembly from the pump. Disconnect the electrical harness. Best to take a couple of pictures to help remember how it was in there before you start. (I’m old, it works for me). Unbolt the pump bracket that holds the pump that is bolted to the side of the frame. Once it is off you can remove the pump from the bracket easily. I took the new pump and jumpered the wiring with my battery to hear the new pump spin up. Then I knew my relay and fuse was ok. I’m no electrician. I know a meter works better. But, I’m cheap. If you don’t hear anything, you will need to remove the battery and tray to gain access to the fuse and relay.

I installed the new pump to the bracket. Then, I installed the bracket to the frame. Hooked the wiring harness back in it proper places and installed the hoses. I then bolted the plastic cover back under the radiator again. Lastly, I hooked the cables back up to the battery

I used the OBDII code reader to clear the codes before I started the engine up. I had to drive for about 100 miles to get all the sensors to register again. Then I went over and passed the emissions check.

The 2003 S10 4.3 ltr does not have the Air pump installed. Seems General Motors figured out it was not needed by then.
