Third door Handle Mod: by SmittyHow many times have you broken the door handle off your third door as you opened it? The original part is made from plastic and cracks easily until it finally splits apart. JTR (Jaguars That Run) has solved the problem by producing a handle made from Aluminum.
Tom picked up two from JTR. One he installed on his door. The other he gave to me. Here is the step by step process for changing it out. The handle comes with instructions and they are also on JTR’s website.
We removed the seatbelt harness from the door and popped the door panel off to get to the mechanisms easier. Remove two screws from the handle assembly in the door. Pry the assembly out of the door. There are two retainer clips on the door rod mechanism. One on the top of the door handle mechanism and one at the bottom. Pop the handle assembly out of the clips and remove it from the door.
Next you have to get a punch and a hammer and drive the pivot pin out. Put a socket under the assembly where the pivot pin will fall through. Make sure you tap the end of the pin out that has the serrated section on it. Once you tap on it a couple of times you will see the serrated end.
Once the pin is out, you can remove the old plastic handle. Grease the ends of the pivot pin and test fit it to the new Aluminum handle. Then Tap the pin through the Aluminum handle into the doors plastic housing. Take the assembly back over to the door and install the rod clips back to the handle mechanism. Attach the lower rod first, then upper rod. Screw the door assembly back into the door. Then pop the door panel back into place. It installs in about an hour. The new handle looks good and is stronger than the plastic original.
